Rules of the Fasting of Ramadan

Rules of the Fasting of Ramadan

Prepared by Mohamed Baianonie, Imam of the Islamic Center of Raleigh, NC
Allaah ﷻ says in the Qur'aan what may be interpreted as, "O' you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you may achieve Taqwaa (righteousness, God-fearing)." [Surat Al-Baqarah, verse 183]
The prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Whoever observes the fast during the month of Ramadan, (while) believing in Allaah and seeking His rewards, will have his past sins forgiven." [Reported by Imaams Bukhaari, Muslim and others]
Fasting the month of Ramadan is one of the main pillars of Islam. It is obligatory upon every sane, healthy Muslim whose reached puberty and is not traveling during the time of fasting. As for women, they must not fast if they are menstruating or having post-childbirth bleeding.

Dua for Fasting:
Nawaitu-un-Asumma Gadam Min Shahri Ramadanul Mubarak, Fardul-laka Ya ALLAH, Fatakabbal Minni Innaka Antas Sami-ul-Alem.
(I intend to fast today in the month of Ramadan, Which is obligatory. O ALLAH, please accept from me as you are the all hearing and all knowing.)

Dua for Ifter:
Allahumma Laka Sumtu wa Tawakkaltu, Wa’alaa Rizkika Aftartu Birahmatika Ya Ar-hamar Rahimeen.
(O ALLAH, for you I have fasted and with your provision I have broken my fasting.)

The Essential Elements Of The Fast

There are two essentials elements for your fast to be valid and accepted. They are:
Intention
You must have the intention to fast before fajr (dawn) every night during the month of Ramadan. The intention does not need to be spoken, because in reality it is an act of the heart, which does not involve the tongue. It will be fulfilled by one's intention from the heart to fast out of obedience to Allaah ﷻ seeking His pleasure.
Abstaining from acts that nullify the Fast
The second essential element for your fast to be accepted is that you abstain from the acts that nullify the fast from dawn to sunset.
If you maintain these two essential elements during fasting, then your fast will be valid and accepted.

Six Actions That Invalidate Or Nullify The Fast:

All scholars have agreed that the following acts will invalidate the fast. They are:
Intentional Eating or Drinking
If someone eats or drinks due to forgetfulness, a mistake, or coercion, then his fast is still valid and should continue to fast. If you choose to eat or drink, for any reason, then your fast will become invalid.
Intentional Vomiting
If one is overcome by the urge to vomit, and vomits unintentionally, then he should continue to fast. If someone chooses to vomit, for any reason, then his fast will become invalid.
Intentional Sexual Intercourse
If one has sexual intercourse while fasting, then he must perform kaffaarah, expiation of the sin. (Fasting continuously for sixty days or if unable then one should feed sixty poor people).
Menstrual or Childbirth Bleeding
The fast becomes invalid during menstrual or post-childbirth bleeding. Even if such bleeding begins just before sunset, the fast of that day is invalid and the day must be made up at a later time.
All the actions mentioned above are agreed upon by all scholars. However, there are some other actions that are not mentioned above which are not agreed upon.

Actions That Are Permissible During Fasting:

There are some actions that are permissible to do while fasting, which will not nullify the fast. For example:
Taking a shower
It is permissible to shower, for any reason, even if you are showering due to thirst or being overheated.
Rinsing the mouth and nose
It is permissible to rinse the mouth and nose without exaggeration; using too much water may cause you to swallow water, which may invalidate your fast.
Applying eyeliner or eye drops
It is permissible to apply kohl (eyeliner) or eye drops or anything else to the eyes, even if some taste from it finds its way to the throat.
Taking injections
It is also permissible to take injections for nutritional or medical purposes; there is no text that proves this invalidates the fast.
Taking suppositories
Similarly, it is permissible to have an enema or douche. The injection of liquid into the rectum through the anus for cleansing, as a laxative, or for other therapeutic purposes, or the use of a suppository (a solid medication designed to melt within a body cavity) or any other medicine that can be used in the private parts, whether in the front or back is permissible. There is no text that considers these acts to nullify the fast.
Accidental consumption
Your fast will not become invalid if you consume something that you could not protect yourself from. For example, swallowing your saliva or accidentally swallowing dust or sifted flour that has accidentally entered your mouth.
Tasting food with the tongue
Your fast will be valid even if you taste food with your tongue or use toothpaste or mouthwash as long as nothing is swallowed.
Breathing in different scents
Kissing and embracing one's spouse
It is permissible to kiss and embrace your spouse as long as one is able to control oneself.
Drawing blood
It is also permissible to draw blood in any amount for any reason. If drawing blood weakens the person, it will be considered a disliked action.
Being in a state of janaabah
Your fast will still be valid even if you find yourself in a state of janaabah (a major ritual impurity) after fajr (dawn) has arrived. Ghusl (a full bath) can still be performed once the time of fajr has begun.

Who May Be Excluded From Fasting?
There are certain situations when it is optional to fast during the month of Ramadan, however, the fast must be made up at a later date. This is the rule for the sick or for the one who is traveling.
However, women who are experiencing post-childbirth bleeding or are in their menses are not allowed to fast until their bleeding ends. They must make up the days they missed fasting at a later date.
For those who cannot fast due to a permanent illness or old age, they have to pay fidiya (feeding one poor person) for each day that they have missed.
Pregnant and nursing women, who are afraid that fasting may weaken them or the child, have the option of fasting or not. After Ramadan ends, they have the choice of fasting or paying fidiyah(feeding one poor person) for each day that they had missed during Ramadan. However, according to the Hanafi School of jurists, such women are only to make up the missed days of fasting, and they are not supposed to feed one poor person a day. On the other hand, Imaams Ahmad and Ash-Shaaf'i, hold the opinion that if such women fear only for the baby, they must pay the fidiyahand make up the days later. If they fear only for themselves or for themselves and the baby, then they are only to make up the missed days at a later date.

Recommended Acts During Ramadan:
There are some acts that are recommended, and if you practice them, you will gain more rewards from Allaah ﷻ such as:
Having suhuur (pre-dawn meal) and delaying it until just before fajr (dawn) time.
We should also hurry to break the fast at sunset.
Another recommended act is that we break the fast by eating an odd number of fresh or dry dates, and if those are not available, then having a drink of water would be sufficient.
Also we can earn rewards by supplicating at the time of breaking the fast, as the prophet ﷺ used to say, Dhahabadh-dhama-oo wabtallatil-'urooqu, wa thabatal-ajru inshaa'Allaah. Which can be translated as, "The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened and Allaah willing, the reward is confirmed."
Another recommended act is that we pray taraaweeh daily after Isha
To gain even more rewards, it is recommended that during Ramadan we increase our recitation and study of the Qur'an. This is because the revelation of the Qur'an began during this time, and also Angel Gabriel used to review the Qur'an with the Prophet during this month.
We can also gain rewards by using Miswaak (a piece of root from the Araak tree found in the Hijaazregion of the Arabian Peninsula used to clean the teeth), if not available, any other cleaning tool to clean the mouth is sufficient.

We ask Allaah ﷻ to strengthen us in Ramadan, accept our fasts, and reward us with His forgiveness and the highest place in Paradise. Ameen.

Sajjdah is only for ALLAH

Allah says, I created man and jinn for no other purpose than to worship Me only. (Dhariyat 51:56)
"Establish the prayer for My remembrance."
"...and the remembrance of Allah is greater."
(Taha: 14) (Al Ankabut:45)

“And he who rejects my remembrance then he will have a constricted life, and we will resurrect him on the day of Judgment blind”
(Ta Ha: 124).

Allah says to the Believers:
"O you who believe! remember Allah, remembering Him much and glorify Him morning and evening." (33:41,42)

“O you who believe! When you rise up for salah, wash you faces, and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. And if you are unclean, purify yourselves … Allah would not place a burden on you, but He would purify you and would perfect His grace upon you, that you may give thanks.” [5:6]

… surely prayer is a timed ordinance for the believers.
(Qur’an An-nisa:103)
“Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope…”
[as-Sajdah; 16]
"And they have been commanded to worship only Allah, being sincere towards Him in their deen and true."
(98:5)
The most honored by Allah amongst you are those best in taqwaa."
(Qur'an S 49:13)
“… Help you one another in al-birr and al-taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety)…” [al-Maa’idah 5:2]
“The believers, men and women, are Awliyaa’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another” [al-Tawbah 9:71]
Allah knows best who is righteous.
(53:32)

“The Believers must (eventually) prosper: Those who humble themselves in their Prayers, who avoid vain talk, who are active in deeds of Charity, and who abstain from (illegal) sex.”
(Al-Mu’minun 23: 1-5)
======================================
A learn scholar; Kabir Edmund Helminski, in Living Presence wrote about The Physical & Mental Benefits of the Islamic Prayer (Salaat):-

“The Islamic ritual prayer, practiced five times a day, is a sequence of standing, bowing, prostrating, and kneeling, accompanied by prescribed verbal affirmations and lines from the Qur’an selected and recited by the individual. The prayer is understood to be invalid without a mindful witnessing of the presence of God. Physically, it exercises the major joints (especially the spinal column), massages the intestinal tract, transmits a reflex to the liver, regulates the breath, and stimulates the frontal cortex of the brain as it is brought to the ground, while momentarily leaving the heart in a higher position than the brain. Salaat is a form that integrates mindfulness, mental precision, affirmation, devotion, and stretching. Done five times a day for a lifetime, it has profound effects on the body and soul.”

Niyyat – when one begins by saying “Allahu akbar”

“Body feels relieved of weight owing to even distribution on both feet. Straightening back improves posture. Mind is brought under control of intellect. Vision is sharpened by focusing upon floor, where head will prostrate. Muscles of upper and lower back are loosened. Higher and lower centers of brain are united to form singleness of purpose.”

Qiyām – during which one recites Al-Fatiha and additional surahs of the Qur’an
“Extends concentration, causes further relaxation of legs and back, generates feelings of humility, modesty, and piety. In the recital of the above verses, virtually all of the sounds that occur in Arabic are uttered, stimulating dispersal of all of the ninety-nine divine attributes in perfectly controlled degrees throughout the body, mind, and soul. The sound vibrations of the long vowels ā, ī, and ū stimulate the heart, thyroid, pineal gland, pituitary, adrenal glands, and lungs, purifying and uplifting them all.”

Rukū – bending at the waist
“Fully stretches the muscles of the lower back, thighs, and calves. Blood is pumped into upper torso. Tones muscles of stomach, abdomen, and kidneys. Over time, this posture improves the personality, generating sweet kindness and inner harmony.”

Qauma – rising from rukū
“The fresh blood moved up into torso in previous posture returns to its original state, carrying away toxins. Body regains relaxation and releases tension.”

Sajdah – prostration
“Knees forming a right angle allow stomach muscles to develop and prevents growth of flabbiness in midsection. Increases flow of blood into upper regions of body, especially the head (including eyes, ears, and nose) and lungs; allows mental toxins to be cleansed by blood. Maintains proper position of fetus in pregnant women. Reduces high blood pressure. Increases elasticity of joints. Annihilates egotism and vanity. Increases patience and reliance upon God. Increases spiritual stations and produces high psychic energy throughout body. This posture of supreme submission and humility is the essence of worship.”

Sajda is performed using seven parts of the body. If you miss one part, the prayer will become invalid.
1. Forehead
2. & 3. both palms
4. & 5. both knees
6. & 7. the big toe of both of your feet

Quūd – assuming the sitting position after sajdah
“For men, the heel of the right foot is curled up and the weight of the leg and part of the body rests upon it. This aids detoxification of the liver and stimulates peristaltic action of the large intestine. Women keep both feet, soles up, underneath their bodies. The body returns to even greater relaxation, and the posture assists digestion by forcing the contents of the stomach downward.”

Repeat of Sajdah
“Repetition of the deep prostration within a few seconds cleanses the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems. Gives experience of lightness of body and emotional happiness. Oxygenation of entire body is accomplished. Balances sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.”

Chapter: The Excellence of knowledge

Allah says,
"Say: 'My Lord! increase me in knowledge," (20:114) and He says, "
Say: 'Are they the same – those who know and those who do not know?"
(39:9)

The Almighty says,
"Allah will raise in rank those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge," (58:11) and the Almighty says,
"Only those of His slaves with knowledge have fear of Allah."

(35:28)

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Anyone who is asked for knowledge and conceals it, will be bridled with a bridle of Fire on the day of Rising."
[Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi]

Ibn Mas'ud said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'May Allah bless a man who hears something from me and transmits it as he heard it. Many a person to whom something is transmitted retains more than the person who first heard it.'"
[at-Tirmidhi]

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Anyone who learns knowledge which should be learned for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, only to obtain by it goods of this world, will not experience the scent of the Garden on the Day of Rising."
[Abu Dawud]

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
“Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence”
(Sahih Bukhari, Vol.4, Hadith 667)

May Allah bless the one who read it & try to memorize the hadith,
May Allah bless the one who share these hadiths too.
May Allah increase our knowledge.
Ameen.

Follow the Sunnah

Allah says throughtout the holy qur'an;
"O you who believe, obey Allah and His Messenger ... " [Al-Qur'an 8:20]
"Obey Allah and the Messenger and perhaps you will be shown mercy."
[Al-Qur'an 3:132] "
If you obey him, you will be guided ... " [Al-Qur'an 24:54]
"Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah ... " [Al-Qur'an 4:79]

Allah also says;
"That what the Messenger brings you and leave what he forbids you ... " [Al-Qur'an 59:7]
"Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger is with those whom Allah has blessed." [Al-Qur'an 4:68]
"We did not send any Messenger but for him to be obeyed by the permission of Allah." [Al-Qur'an 4:63]

"Say: obey Allah and obey the Messenger ... " [Al-Qur'an 24:54]
"Say: if you love Allah, follow me and He will love you and forgive you your wrong actions." [Al-Qur'an 3:31]
"Believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet who believes in Allah and His words. Follow him, perhaps you will be guided." [Al-Qur'an 7:157]
"Take what the Messenger brings you." [Al-Qur'an 59:7]

"Believe in Allah and His Messenger and the light which He sent down."
[Al-Qur'an 64:8]
"We sent you as a witness and a bringer of good news and a warner so that they might believe in Allah and His Messenger." [Al-Qur'an 48:8-9]

"Believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet." [Al-Qur'an 7:158]

Whoever obeys the Messenger, he indeed obeys Allah, and whoever turns back, so We have not sent you as a keeper over them. (Surah An-Nisa, 80)

¸.·´¯`·.¸¸><((((º> ¸.·´¯`·.¸¸><((((º>¸.·´¯`·.¸¸><((((º> ¸.·´¯`·.¸¸>

ALLAH WARNS THOSE WHO REFUSE TO OBEY THE HOLY PROPHET (PEACE BE UPON HIM)

Allah says, "Let those who oppose his command beware of a trial that might strike them or a painful punishment that might befall them." [Al-Qur'an 24:63] and "Whoever splits from the Messenger of Allah after the guidance is clear to him and follows other than the path of the believers, We shall entrust him to what he has turned to." [Al-Qur'an 4:114]

Allah says, "Whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared a blaze for the unbelievers." [Al-Qur'an 48:13]

Allah talks about the unbelievers in the depths of the Fire saying, "On the day when their faces are turned over in the Fire, they will say, 'Would that we had obeyed Allah and that we had obeyed the Messenger.' " [Al-Qur'an 33:66] They will wish they had obeyed when the wish will not profit them.

'Anas related that the Prophet said,
"Anyone who dislikes my sunnah is not of me." [Muslim and al-Bukhari]

"All of my community will enter the Garden except for those who refuse to." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, who will refuse?" He replied, "Whoever obeys me will enter the Garden. Whoever rebels against me has refused." [Al-Hakim]

.·´¯`·.¸¸><((((º> ¸.·´¯`·.¸¸><((((º>¸.·´¯`·.¸¸><((((º> ¸.·´¯`·.¸¸>

Allah also says, "You have a good model in the Messenger of Allah for one who hopes for Allah and the Last Day." [Al-Qur'an 33:21]
Muhammad ibn 'Ali at-Tirmidhi said, "To take the Messenger as a model means to emulate him, follow his sunnah and abandon opposition to him in either word or action."

The Sunnah is the explanation of the Qur'an.In the Qur'an, it has been mentioned that the prophet removes heavy burdens, makes rules, teaches the ummah (society) the open and hidden meanings of the Qur'an. As a matter of fact, when we look at the practices of Sunnah, we see that the prophet of Allah gave His companions a lot of information about numerous subjects. This information was then interpreted by scholars of the time, continued to be practised in daily lives and has passed on to us generations to generations.

Allah says:
"Certainly Allah conferred a benefit upon the believers when He raised among them a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His communications and purifying them, and teaching them the Book and the wisdom, although before that they were surely in manifest error." (Surah Al-e Imran, 164)

We can give "salat" (ritual prayers) as a clear example to understanding the commands of the religion. As well known, in Islam, performing salat 5 times a day is an obligation and there are verses giving general information about how to perform it, how to perform ablution (wash). However, we can understand how exactly we should perform prayers only by looking at sunnah. Because there is no detailed information in the verses about the way of praying, what to say in prayer, the way of man and woman's performing the prayer, the degree of importance of the prayers, the details of ablution, what nullifies ablution. We can learn such details only by looking at Sunnah of the prophet.

As another example, we can mention the suggestions of the prophet about Friday and the things He said about Friday prayer. Beside the subjects such as speaking that which is best, cleanness, foods, modesty, there are verses in the Qur'an about obligations such as fasting, ablution and hajj (pilgrimage). However, there is no detailed information about those worships in the verses. We learn the detail information about how to perform these worships from the interpretations of the scholars about the words and habits of the prophet.

"Surely We have sent you as a witness and as a bearer of good news and as a warner, That you may believe in Allah and His Messenger and may aid him and revere him; and (that) you may declare His glory, morning and evening. Surely those who swear allegiance to you do but swear allegiance to Allah; the hand of Allah is above their hands. Therefore whoever breaks (his faith), he breaks it only to the injury of his own soul, and whoever fulfils what he has covenanted with Allah, He will grant him a mighty reward." (Surah Al-Fath, 8-10)

Allah is the teacher who teaches us through Muhammad Sal Allahu alaihi wasallam.
"Allah decrees what He wishes by the tongue of Muhammad… "
(Sunaan Abu Dawud, 3.41.5112)

SO DO NOT TURN AWAY FROM THE SUNNAH
(practice of Muhammad Sal Allahu alaihi wasallam)

AL QURAN UL KAREEM

AL QURAN UL KAREEM

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Tafsir of Surat Al-Fatihah (Chapter 1) .....................[0012]

The Meaning of Ad-Din

Ad-Din means the reckoning, the reward or punishment. Similarly, Allah said,

﴿يَوْمَئِذٍ يُوَفِّيهِمُ اللَّهُ دِينَهُمُ الْحَقَّ﴾

(On that Day Allah will pay them the (Dinahum) recompense (of their deeds) in full) (24:25), and,

﴿أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ﴾

(Shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)) (37:53). A Hadith stated,

«الْكَيِّسُ مَنْ دَانَ نَفْسَهُ وَعَمِلَ لِمَا بَعْدَ الْمَوتِ»

(The wise person is he who reckons himself and works for (his life) after death.) meaning, he holds himself accountable. Also, `Umar said, "Hold yourself accountable before you are held accountable, weigh yourselves before you are weighed, and be prepared for the biggest gathering before He Whose knowledge encompasses your deeds,

﴿يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لاَ تَخْفَى مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ ﴾

(That Day shall you be brought to Judgement, not a secret of yours will be hidden) (69:18).''

﴿إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴾

(5. You we worship, and You we ask for help.) (1:5)

The Linguistic and Religious Meaning of `Ibadah

Linguistically, `Ibadah means subdued. For instance, a road is described as Mu`abbadah, meaning, `paved'. In religious terminology, `Ibadah implies the utmost love, humility and fear.

The Merit of stating the Object of the Action before the Doer of the Act, and the Merit of these Negations

"You...'', means, we worship You alone and none else, and rely on You alone and none else. This is the perfect form of obedience and the entire religion is implied by these two ideas. Some of the Salaf said, Al-Fatihah is the secret of the Qur'an, while these words are the secret of Al-Fatihah,

﴿إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴾

(5. You we worship, and You we ask for help from.)

The first part is a declaration of innocence from Shirk (polytheism), while the second negates having any power or strength, displaying the recognition that all affairs are controlled by Allah alone. This meaning is reiterated in various instances in the Qur'an. For instance, Allah said,

﴿فَاعْبُدْهُ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَيْهِ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَـفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ﴾

(So worship Him (O Muhammad ) and put your trust in Him. And your Lord is not unaware of what you (people) do.) (11:123),

﴿قُلْ هُوَ الرَّحْمَـنُ ءَامَنَّا بِهِ وَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا﴾

(Say: "He is the Most Gracious (Allah), in Him we believe, and in Him we put our trust.'') (67:29),

﴿رَّبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلاً ﴾

((He alone is) the Lord of the east and the west; La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He).

So take Him alone as Wakil (Disposer of your affairs)), (73:9), and,

﴿إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴾

(You we worship, and You we ask for help from).

We should mention that in this Ayah, the type of speech here changes from the third person to direct speech by using the Kaf in the statement Iyyaka (You). This is because after the servant praised and thanked Allah, he stands before Him, addressing Him directly;

﴿إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴾

(You we worship, and You we ask for help from).

So take Him alone as Wakil (Disposer of your affairs)), (73:9), and,

﴿إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴾

(You we worship, and You we ask for help from).

We should mention that in this Ayah, the type of speech here changes from the third person to direct speech by using the Kaf in the statement Iyyaka (You). This is because after the servant praised and thanked Allah, he stands before Him, addressing Him directly;
